Bree Island is an Indigenous multi-hyphenate filmmaker, practicing Woodland artist, and creative lead/owner of Mixed Creatives, a VFX/CGI and animation studio. A tribal member of the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation (Treaty 8), Bree currently resides on the unceded ancestral lands of the Kwantlen First Nation.
Bree also owns ᒥᔪᓈᑿᐣ Miyonâkwan Studio, a nêhiyaw / Cree Woodland visual arts studio focused on sharing cultural stories through art, design, and film. Her work reflects nêhiyaw / Cree worldviews, honouring connections to land, spirit, and ancestral knowledge while ensuring Indigenous values shape the future.
Founded in 2017, Mixed Creatives is an Indigenous and woman-owned global visual arts studio based in Canada, specializing in VFX/CGI, 2D/3D animation, and motion graphics for film, TV, and commercial projects. The studio helped create the animated short Inkwo for When the Starving Return by Amanda Strong, which premiered at TIFF 2024 and Sundance 2025, and contributed VFX/CGI to several Indigenous films.
Through both studios, Bree’s work embodies Indigenous futurisms, decolonization, and ancestral intelligence, celebrating Indigenous resilience and advocating for “not about us without us” in film and television.
